Hanover is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, located 19 miles southwest of York and 54 miles north-northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. It is located 5 miles north of the Mason-Dixon line. The town is an agriculturally prosperous area and is named after the German city of Hannover.
This borough has since become known as the “Snack Food Capital of the World” due to establishing multiple food manufacturing businesses there during the twentieth century. In addition, it was the site of the final encounter between the Union and Confederate States armies before they fought against each other in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.
Many believe Hanover to be the snack food capital of the United States, and it has been featured on the Food Network several times. Since 1921, it has been home to Utz Quality Foods, which still manufactures its goods there and an Utz outlet store and Snyder’s of Hanover since 1905. Other snack food manufacturers near Millersville, PA include Hanover Foods, Wolfgang Candy, Martin’s Potato Chips, Stauffer Biscuit Company, Hershey Foods, Herr’s Snacks, and Gibbles Potato Chips.
Menchey Music Service was formed in Hanover in 1936 and still has its headquarters there. The Vulcan Materials Company operates a vast limestone quarry north of Hanover. It has an office on Oxford Avenue.”The Golden Mile” along Eisenhower Drive, downtown Hanover, Gateway Hanover, and North Hanover Mall are among the retail shopping centers in Hanover.
Some local points of interest in the Hanover area are the Hanover Area Historical Society’s Neas House, a local history museum; Hanover Shoe Company, an extensive shoe factory built in 1910, has been turned into flats.
Codorus State Park features a big artificial lake, pontoon boat rentals, motorboat rentals, canoe rentals, rowboat rentals, paddle boats, disc golf courses, and one of Pennsylvania’s largest pools.
R H Sheppard Museum, a diesel engine museum with a diverse collection of exhibits, the audio tour is accessible in both English and Spanish; The Eichelberger Performing Arts Center in the old auditorium of the previous high school was erected in 1896. Throughout the year, it presents a variety of performances and activities.
